The religious mind can find it difficult to accept that Jesus lived somewhere, but he did. He had a home, a base for His ministry, in Capernaum. We are accustomed to seeing Jesus poor, almost destitute and always on the move. But He actually had a home in Capernaum. His disciples accompanied Him there and saw His home. We do not know how He lived, but we know He spent a great deal of time in Capernaum.

When He first arrived there, He went to the synagogue and taught. The place exists even today. When He entered the synagogue, an unclean spirit began to scream at Him, but He cast it out, right in the middle of the service. It was as though the demons knew what was to come. Opposition against Him rose up immediately, trying to silence Him. Many of God’s people have been halted in this way, never to get any further. The initial resistance was too intense, causing them to quit before really even starting.

This was not the case with Jesus. What was meant to silence Him, to disgrace Him, instead became a triumph for Him. Here was a man who did not speak like others. Even the evil spirits obeyed Him. News about Him immediately spread throughout the entire area. No marketing strategy in the world can compete with the effect of a single miracle. Signs and wonders are God’s posters, His marketing strategy. When God wants to get people’s attention, He turns an attack into a miracle. Such a sign is supernatural and points to the Supernatural One. Something new had come, a new teaching with power and authority. Yet it really was not new. That which previously had been only theory now became reality before the people’s eyes.
